Ryan Murphy’s latest television adaptation, The Shards, has a new trailer and a confirmed premiere date. Based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis, the dark coming-of-age drama unfolds in 1980s Los Angeles and centers on a group of privileged high school students whose lives are upended by violence and excess.
Series premise
The story follows Bret, an aspiring writer whose final year of high school starts to collapse after a mysterious new student, Robert Mallory, arrives. At the same time, a serial killer known as the Trawler is stalking teenagers across the Valley. As Bret’s inner life intensifies, tensions spread through his relationships with girlfriend Debbie and friends Susan and Thom while the wealthy, drug-fueled environment of their private school life and the misconduct of adults around them further erode their youth.

When and where
The Shards is scheduled to premiere on FX and Hulu on August 5, with the premiere listed at 6 p.m. PT. A new trailer has been issued ahead of that launch, offering a first look at the show’s blend of teen drama, 1980s excess, and serial-killer menace.
