Filmmaker Barrett D. Carroll has written, directed and appears in a new queer psychological horror short titled EAT, which will screen at multiple festivals this August. The piece examines desire and repression through a contemporary, tense premise: a flesh-hungry stranger and a closeted husband connect via a kink app, and what starts as exploration becomes a night of escalating, primal horror.
Talent and creative team
- Barrett D. Carroll – writer, director and lead performer
- Cast includes Devin Way (The Comeback, Queer as Folk), Kahyun Kim (Cocaine Bear, American Gods), Brandon Delsid (The Rehearsal, New Amsterdam), and Emmy-nominee Dot-Marie Jones (Glee, American Horror Story) in a pivotal role.
- Makeup and practical effects were created by Steven Imhoff, whose previous credits include Halloween Ends, Nope and Fallout.
- Executive producers named on the project include Aurora Perrineau, Oscar-nominated producer Andrew Carlberg and former Fangoria editor and producer Tony Timpone; producers include Anthony Del Negro, Dylan Canfield, Christopher Sheffield and Chris Labadie.
The short has attracted attention from established genre figures. Jeffrey Reddick, creator of the Final Destination franchise, offered strong praise for the film’s unsettling tone and darkly humorous approach to its themes.
Festival appearances
EAT’s August festival schedule is highlighted by three genre-focused stops. The short is set to play the Queer Screams Film Festival on August 16. It will then appear at Mad Monster Expo during the convention’s August 21–23 run and will screen at the HollyShorts Film Festival on August 22.
With a combination of recognizable performers, practical FX and a contemporary psychological premise, EAT aims to make an impression on festival audiences across the month. Collectors and fans following festival programming or the careers of the listed cast and creatives may want to track screening schedules for potential in-person viewings.
