Cannibal Apocalypse – The UK Replay Video Release & Video Nasty Controversy
One of the most infamous Video Nasties of the 1980s, Cannibal Apocalypse (1980) was released in the UK by Replay Video before being swiftly banned under the Video Recordings Act. This brutal mix of Vietnam war trauma and cannibal horror, starring John Saxon, became one of the most sought-after tapes among collectors due to its controversial reputation and extreme violence.
The Replay Video release featured striking cover art, but its graphic content—including flesh-eating soldiers, brutal shootouts, and disturbing themes—quickly landed it on the Director of Public Prosecutions’ banned list. Despite heavy censorship, Cannibal Apocalypse remains a cult classic, known for its gritty storytelling and gory practical effects by Gianetto De Rossi.
